The Evolution of Quinine

It is a very common practice for a drug that is intended for one use to be used for another. Acetaminophen is a medication intended for pain relief and fever reduction. Yet, consumers used acetaminophen as an anti-inflammatory. Another example is Tums. Tums are used to treat an upset stomach. There are consumers that chew on Tums daily to get their calcium intake. Using Tums as a calcium supplement is an off-label usage. In many cases, off-label usage of a medication does not result in any unsafe or detrimental conditions. In fact, it sometimes helps a consumer to take care of another health issue without too much trouble. But using any medication for an off-label usage is highly opposed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other medical and health professionals. Using a drug for an off-label use can cause unpredictable results and can be quite difficult to treat.

Quinine is another example of consumers using a drug for a treatment other than what it has been approved for. It has resulted in rather damaging circumstances. Ask any quinine attorney and you will find a long list of medical injuries from quinine.

Quinine is supposed to be used to treat malaria. Quite innocently enough, some consumers began to realize that quinine also helps to alleviate pain caused from leg cramps and other areas that have arthritis. But using quinine for this treatment and not for treating malaria has gone very badly. Consumers began experiencing very devastating side effects. Below is a list of just some of the side effects that have been reported.

Quinine Side Effects

When a consumer takes quinine but does not have malaria, they have experienced one or more of the following side effects:
  • Their vision became blurred
  • Their hearing level decreased and/or they developed ringing in the ears
  • They feel nauseated and may even vomit
  • They experience diarrhea sometimes accompanied with abdominal pain
  • They experience skin itching and flushes
  • They will have a tendency to have headaches and/or a fever
One can always expect some side effects with medications, the occasional headache, tiredness or nausea. But quinine side effects can be quite serious. Consumers taking quinine have been hit with liver damage, heart issues or death. This is unacceptable, and consequently the FDA has pulled medications that contain quinine off the shelf.

If you have taken quinine and have had any medical issues, you have legal rights that will protect you and your loved ones.
