Because of serious drug side effect risks, the FDA was forced to make this decision. Although several unapproved Quinine products, including herbal remedies and others that are sold over the counter and on the internet, have been recently added to the market, it is still only approved for the treatment of malaria. Unfortunately, Quinine has become a popular drug for the treatment of leg cramps. Tens of thousands of people are using Quinine for this off-label purpose.

Although experts are now warning of the dangers of the use of Quinine for leg cramps, it appears to be growing in popularity. The side effects can be deadly. Quinine can be used to treat malaria because malaria can be deadly. The FDA states it used a balancing test to determine the benefits of Quinine to treat malaria outweigh the side effects. However, the potential risks of using Quinine for the treatment of leg cramps clearly outweigh the possible benefits.
